Journal #30

Uniforms in schools has always been a much debated topic especially amongst high schools. Personally, I am pretty indifferent about the subject, and I do not really care whether our students wear uniforms or not. However, if I were to pick whether or not to have them, I would enjoy not have school uniforms. I enjoy wearing my own clothes every day, and I like having my own "style." I believe that many other students here at Pleasant Plains High School feel the same way. I know this because students today constantly break the dress code that is currently in effect. This tells me that some kids feel the need to differentiate themselves from others with their apparel. Another point school uniforms bring up is that everybody's body is very different. This means that many of the uniforms would not fit correctly. I know I like well fitting clothes, and I am sure that most other students do as well. If we were to wear clothes all the time that made us uncomfortable, it would be distracting during the school day. Now on the other hand, I can see why some students would want to wear uniforms during school. Some students, especially those who are deemed "not attractive" by the modern world, would appreciate the fact that they are not judged on their clothing or body alone. This reminds me of the critically acclaimed film "Mean Girls." Many of the girls i the school are considered "nerds" or "gross" simply because of their appearance. Another valid point would be that having school uniforms would be much easier to enforce school rules upon, and it would be easier for the students. The students would really only have to worry about one or two pairs of clothes excluding the weekend. Also, they would save a lot more money in which they would normally spend on buying other nice clothes for school. Overall, I am very indifferent on the topic of school uniforms in Pleasant Plains High School because I can see the benefits and downfalls on both ends.
