Journal #15
Logic and reasoning both play large roles in my everyday life. I enjoy the fact that these influence my life because they are the cornerstones of Rationalism, and most Rationalists were very smart and successful men. However, most everybody uses some sort of logic or reason every day. We make thousands of decisions each day, but for the most part, we do not realize the smaller decisions. For example, you are walking down the hallway and you choose subconsciously to walk to the left. Then, out of nowhere, a huge guy runs right into you. Your books fly everywhere and you are embarrassed because of one little decision. I think logic and reason are very similar in nature. According to my definitions, if something is logical, then it is in one's best interest, and it makes sense rationally. To me, rationality has basically the same definition, but it think it applies more to real life situations. I am really not sure why I think that, but it makes sense to me, so I just go with it. I believe that I truly do apply logic and reason to my everyday life. For example, just today I used reason to decide which lunch line to stand in. Obviously, it is an easy decision because I simply went to the shorter line. However, I exhibited logic and reason very well in that situation. Of course, I did not want to wait very long to get my lunch; therefore, I wanted the shortest wait time in the line. Being the logical and reasonable minded person I am, I chose to stand in the line with the least people in it. Obviously, this decision took mere seconds to make, but it is a model for the kinds of decisions in which one makes every day.
