Journal #5

I think that it is a novel idea to take away the things that kids use most to ground them. It is smart on the parents' part because kids these days are sneaky like that. Let's say that your parents ground you from taking the car and leaving the house. It is easy to just stay home and talk to your friends via facebook or some other kind of social network. However, now that entire realm of social networking is shut down. From teenager’s point of view, of course I think this is a terrible idea. As a kid when I got sent to my room, I always thought I was so clever because I would just play video games for hours. I thought I really fooled those parents of mine. But now, if I got sent to my room, my parents will become wise of this fact, and I will actually have to suffer some kind of consequence. Depending on the specific situation, I think that this kind of punishment is indeed fair 21st century punishment. However, depending on the severity of the situation, I think some punishments should be more severe. For example, some teens spend all of their time on facebook or texting, but some others just use social networking things such as these occasionally to pass the time. I believe that I am one of these people. Thus, if I were to be punished like this, I would be okay with it. I would like to see and read this article because I think I know exactly the type of person who wrote it. I think they are one of those middle-aged people of are barely technologically literate. They probably think that every teenager only communicates through some piece of technology. I think these people are very ridiculous because they are so ignorant, and they think that “their generation” is somehow the best.

  1. I like that you discussed the topic from different points of view. You also have a very good point in that it is not always fair just to take away social networking, because not everyone uses it much.
