The Old Man and the Sea: Final Reaction

Even though this is not my final post for Old Man and the Sea, I feel like I should write my final reaction when I finished the book before I forget what I really thought about it. Overall, I thought it was a pretty solid book all around. Personally, I thought Hemingway did a nice job with his different writing techniques, and they fit the plot quite well. Santiago was a very rich character. He would be considered a “hero” in my eyes because of his stern beliefs and techniques, and I really enjoyed some of his flashbacks. I especially liked the one with the Negro of Cienfuegos and the arm wrestling match. There was even a little humor in the story. For instance, when Santiago talks about his idol Joe DiMaggio having a painful bone spur, he does not know what a bone spur is, so he makes up what he thinks it means. One thing I do have a bit of a problem with is the length of the novel. I think that it was a little too short in length. That is not to say that I enjoy reading a thousand page books because I do not. I just think that there should have been more bulk to the story. It was a nice plot, but there should have been more of it. I also believe that it ended a bit abruptly. I have heard this comment from other people as well. It kind of reminded me of the series finale of the television program The Sopranos. It got to a decent ending point but not a great one, and the whole thing just kind of ended leaving the reader wondering many things. Maybe there could have been more resolution as to what happened after Santiago woke up. I suppose that it is only fitting for me to end this blog entry in the same way as The Sopranos and The Old Man and the Sea, abruptly.
